More Number Sense

The following is the conversation in the car on the way home.

Colin: "See boys, Mommy!"
Me: "You see boys, Colin?"
Colin: "Yeah! Two boys!"
Me: "You see two boys?"
Colin: "Yeah!"
Kevin: "But there is only one girl, so there are less girls."

It is so fun to hear the way they grow and develop!

A Dinner Worth Mentioning

While the boys were at dinner Saturday night the following events occurred:

(Before dinner, while ordering.)
Kevin: "I want crunchy ravioli for dinner."
Colin: "I want ravioli too."
Me: "The crunchy kind?"
Colin: "No. Not crunchy."
Me: "The soft kind, like we had for dinner last night?"
Colin: "Yeah. Not crunchy."

(When dinner arrives.)
Colin: "Nooo! Not that ravioli!" (When his boiled ravioli is placed in front of him.)
Me: "Colin, what is wrong?"
Colin: "Want that ravioli!" (Points to Kevin's toasted ravioli.)
Me: "Colin, that is what you ordered." (Trying to think of what to do next.)
Kevin: "That's okay Colin. I will share my ravioli with you!"
Me: "Colin, is it okay if Kevin shares his ravioli with you?"
Colin: (Stops crying and nods.)
Kevin: "Yeah, that is a good plan. He can have three!" (There were only 6!)

So my four-year-old got Colin to stop crying immediately and shared his food. Colin then agreed to share three of his ravioli with Kevin. They did such a great job that we even stopped for a shake on the way home!

Okay, so it is just his coloring book, but he is very adorable about it. Here is a picture of a dinosaur where he colored the the face, tail, and claws (his words) black.


Here is another picture he colored tonight at dinner. First he colored the eyes, teeth, and claws green. Then he switched to orange where he colored the rocks and grass. Then he said he said "make clouds" while drawing at the top. The lines down the sides are "lightning" and the orange blob in the middle at the top is "big thunder." And lastly he added "grass" at the bottom.


I love it! He always narrates what he is doing. If you haven't seen or heard it I hope you do soon!

We have news! (For a few of you.)

I know most readers know this already, but we are pregnant! Our third child is due April 8th, 2011! We are all very excited. Kevin has told us several times over the last few months that he wanted a baby sister. I am not sure if we will deliver or not on that, but he is excited anyway. Colin is less enthused. He does like to talk about taking care of the new baby, but he doesn't quite understand just yet. He will be almost 3 by the time the baby arrives, so hopefully he will be better prepared by then.

Great Things

Here are three things that have happened in the last two days.

1. Kevin said the following on the way to daycare: "I think Halloween is the favorite of my whole life." He had just passed the pumpkin patch we went to the previous year. Halloween is also my favorite, so I guess it is good that we are related.

2. Colin now says "bee car!" whenever we see Volkswagen Bugs. He calls all bugs "bees." And Kevin calls that car a bug, so Colin calls it a "bee car."

3. Colin read his first book tonight! Okay, not by reading the words, but rather the pictures. He had picked The Aristocats to read for bedtime. I was near the beginning of the book when he took the book away from me and said "Stop reading mommy. You read no." He put the book in his lap and told me "I read now." Then he started to tell me what was happening in the pictures! It was adorable, and he knows some parts by heart so some of the words were similar. Mostly though, it was him describing who was nice, who was mean, and specifically what was happening in each picture. ("It raining. Yeah. He picked up cat. Going home. Washed off.") Kevin didn't enjoy it much. He asked if I would read the book to him when Colin was finished. I told him no, and said this was how he first read books too. He got it after that.

(Side note: Colin needs to learn another language. He always puts the word "no" at the end of a sentence. For example: "Want more juice no. Daddy sit down no. Kevin share no." We are enjoying it before he learns how to say "I don't want anymore juice.)

Colin's Eye

Colin got (another) mosquito bite near his eye. Here is what he looked like for several days. He looked like he had a black eye this time. Less "Quasimodo" and more "socked in the face."

Kevin's Birthday Party

Kevin turned four on August 30th and he wanted a pirate party. So we hosted a friend party at the City Museum. (The family party was the following night.) Ella, Chase, Parker, Emily, Rachel, Ryan and Kyle were all able to attend. I hope they all had fun. From what I saw, I think they did. Parker and Ella even caught a magic show.

Our hope was for Kevin to explore and have fun, hopefully gaining some confidence from his older friends. He used to be hesitant on trying new things, but after this party, I am not sure I can still say that! Kevin climbed everything. I am not kidding. He climbed even the tallest tunnels outside with Daddy, and was excited to take me through them again and again. And he had no problem following Kyle and Chase through the small underground tunnel inside.

Colin was still a bit scared of most things. He didn't ride the train this time. (Good idea!) And he really only ventured into the areas where he could walk with an adult. And surprisingly, he was more than happy to leave a bit earlier than everyone else to head home and take a nap. (Thank you Pappy Grandma!)

Robots!

Every couple of weeks or so, robots show up in our house. They are not very coordinated, as they run into walls and sometimes each other. But they are fun, they laugh a lot, and the only mess they leave are two piles of toys on the floor.
