Updated Fireplace

*I wrote this blog, not realizing that I had already blogged it. I don't want to delete either one since they include different details. So I decided to post both.

I have disliked our fireplace for so long. And we have been on a big kick updating the house since the kitchen has been remodeled, and there are little things we keep doing. I have been wanting to whitewash the fireplace, but Kevin didn't want it. He strongly dislikes painted bricks. But my friend (and art teacher) said she would help. And when I showed Kevin what her plans were, he was hesitantly okay with it.

So he went to work on a Thursday and it was finished when he got home. We used bone colored paint, instead of white, which made him more comfortable. And we also didn't whitewash according to directions online, and we just hand painted all the bricks. He said it "looked better." Which is gold coming from him. I think he might still be getting used to it, though.

After moving the furniture to paint, I realized how much more I love the room with the full windows exposed, so Kevin then rearranged the furniture to let more light into the family room. And I love that room so much more now!

Before (but we had already tested a few bricks)
Our first attempt. This was after about 20 minutes. We realized that the affect was too slight, and went lighter. We had painted up to the top of the insert.

About 20 minutes later, going lighter.

Brick is painted!

Getting rid of the brown mantle. (Our goal is to eventually build the mantle so it wraps around the fireplace and touches the wall on either side.)

Finished product.

There is so much light when the large furniture is not in front of two windows.

New furniture arrangement.
